Experiencing a resort can feel like finding a second home, especially when it’s infused with local spirit. At this Mexican-owned destination, that feeling is a promise fulfilled.
Velas Resorts is a collection deeply rooted in Mexico’s cultural tapestry, where each property invites guests to immerse themselves in local traditions. My journey began at Velas Vallarta, an all-inclusive, family-friendly haven that is the brand’s inaugural property, designed to celebrate the vibrant Día de los Muertos festival.
The beachfront resort captivates with its pristine surroundings, from charming brick pathways to stunning architectural arches. I found myself snapping endless photos and videos, utterly captivated by the beauty that transformed with the light throughout the day. The accommodations did not disappoint either. Each room features a kitchenette, breathtaking views, and cozy touches that create that comforting home-away-from-home vibe.
One standout aspect of my stay was Velas Vallarta’s innovative engagement with local heritage during the Día de los Muertos festivities. Guests were invited to participate in a guided Catrina Celebration, featuring a traditional Ofrenda de Muertos, honoring those we’ve lost, complemented by eight life-sized Catrina sculptures that narrate the history of Puerto Vallarta.
But the experience doesn’t end there. Velas Vallarta offers a plethora of activities that not only pamper but also forge connections with the cultural tapestry outside its gates. I enjoyed skull painting, water aerobics, morning yoga, a romantic beachfront dinner, and even explored downtown Puerto Vallarta, where I marveled at the world’s tallest Catrina.
The culinary offerings were equally exceptional. From succulent breakfast burritos to mouthwatering short rib tacos, one evening was especially festive with a Mexican Fiesta featuring traditional dishes and desserts, including authentic corn tortillas and fresh churros, all complemented by a local all-female mariachi band.
As my stay progressed, it felt less like a visit to a resort and more like being welcomed into a local’s home. Velas Vallarta transcends the typical resort experience. Here, the sterile feel of a conventional resort gives way to a sense of community, where visitors become family and the rich culture of Mexico permeates every cherished moment.
