Chris Bumstead stands as one of the most celebrated bodybuilders in history, claiming six consecutive victories in the Classic Physique category at The Olympia between 2019 and 2024. This remarkable achievement established him as an enduring icon in the sport before officially stepping away in 2024. In a recent Instagram reel, Bumstead shared insights into the strategy that propelled his success, revealing that victory involved more than just calorie counting or tracking personal bests during workouts.
“I was reflecting on what allowed me to win six Olympias,” Bumstead said in an IG video aimed at his nearly 26 million followers. This question often arises during fitness conventions, signing events, and podcast appearances. However, the most profound answer emerged only after his retirement in 2024. Bumstead began asking himself what worked—and what didn’t—during his career, leading him to a vital realization.
While the physical demands of bodybuilding are immense, Bumstead emphasizes that mindset is more crucial than mere sets and reps. He contends that establishing clear, specific goals is the true cornerstone of success. “It may seem obvious, but narrowing your focus allows you to go further. What people overlook is just how specific that focus needs to be and how deep it can go,” he elaborated.
The Secret Behind 6 Olympia Wins
Bumstead attributes his six Olympia titles to a sharp focus on specific goals.
According to Bumstead, aspiring to be the best is more than a mere statement. His objective was to secure six Olympia titles. “After competing in my first Olympia in 2017 and finishing second, I thought, ‘This is it.’ I’m going to win six Olympias before 30. (Michael) Jordan achieved six rings, and I want six titles—I plan to start a family by 30 and step away then,” he shared.
Bumstead was so determined to win these titles that he turned down numerous offers to compete in other shows. “I received tempting offers,” he recalls, mentioning generous incentives to compete internationally or even do guest appearances. “The Arnold is a prestigious title with substantial financial rewards, yet I declined all these opportunities. It’s about what you choose not to do, which allows you to concentrate fully on your primary goals.”
While many bodybuilders are already goal-oriented—sacrificing social activities and dining out—Bumstead believes this mindset can go even deeper. “It’s about recognizing what blurs that focus,” he advised. “Some might argue that participating at The Arnold builds toward winning an Olympia, as it connects to becoming a better bodybuilder. For me, it was clear: I would shift my attention and focus from my singular goal of winning the Olympias.”
The focus undoubtedly paid off. After finishing as runner-up in both 2017 and 2018, Bumstead dominated the Men’s Classic Physique category, achieving six consecutive victories from 2018 to 2024, just as he had envisioned. He credits his single-minded approach as giving him an edge, as his competitors were distracted by various events throughout the year in preparation for bodybuilding’s elite showcase.
Though fans suggested Bumstead move beyond Classic Physique and attempt the Open division, he chose to compete in the EVLS Prague Pro only after concluding his Olympia campaign. There, he secured a respectable runner-up position against Martin Fitzwater. “What many overlook is that your focus in the present is stored energy for who you will become later,” Bumstead stated.
Focus Builds Confidence (And Performance)
Realizing his ability to dedicate more attention to the Olympia than his rivals instilled confidence in Bumstead. “I literally told my competitors, ‘You guys are not going to beat me,’” he recalled. “I made it clear to a few of them: you won’t win unless you focus solely on this. I’m not the hardest worker or the strongest, but my focus is on one thing. Unless you do the same, you can’t beat me.”
In his closing remarks, Bumstead emphasized hard work, discipline, and determination as fundamental for progress. “Clarity is essential. You must be specific about what you want,” he urged. “Only then can you say ‘no’ to distractions and ‘yes’ to the opportunities that align with your objectives.” In the caption accompanying his motivational video, he noted, “I’m not claiming it’s the ‘right way,’ but if you’re dedicated to pushing your limits, it’s certainly not the wrong approach.”
